Help Prevent Marine Debris: Support the NMSF Marine Debris Campaign

Marine debris is a global problem. It can be seen on shorelines and beaches around the world. It lays unseen as tiny pieces floating on the ocean surface, or heavier pieces on the ocean floor. Because of the longevity and durability of the materials we use today, marine debris is a problem that we must not ignore. The NOAA Marine Debris Program works to identify and address this persistent problem on a national and international scale.

Debris can come from the most inland areas, by runoff or through storm drain systems, debris is carried through rivers, and canals, finally making its way to the ocean. Debris can also come directly from ships or platforms at sea. Once in the ocean, winds and currents have the ability to move floating debris far from its point of origin.

In the United States, as well as other parts of the world, marine debris continues to present a hazard to marine ecosystems and wildlife as well as safe navigation. There is also a risk to human health and safety. Marine debris may transport alien species as well as certain pollutants.

Marine debris is a problem we can solve, and by working together we can make a difference. Entities across the nation are working to help solve and prevent the marine debris problem. For example, in Hawaii and along the northeastern coast of the U.S., fishermen bring back derelict ghostnets collected at sea. They even dispose of used gear in dedicated port reception bins, where the nets are taken and used to create electricity. Scientific research ranging from the relationship between plastic debris and pollutants to the effects of derelict fishing nets on coral reefs, are some of the many types of projects ongoing across the United States. Nearly every weekend across the nation, communities and groups participate in beach and in-water debris cleanups.

You can help support these efforts by donating to the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation (NMSF). The NMSF is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, dedicated to inspiring all people to preserve, protect, and promote America’s underwater treasures.

Your support will help increase and promote marine debris prevention efforts across the U.S. to help solve this global problem. With your generous contribution we can make a big difference.

Everyone, no matter how close or far from the ocean, can make a difference! Reduce, reuse, recycle, and participate in local beach or stream cleanups!

Marine debris is a worldwide problem that will take all of us working together to solve! For more information on marine debris visit www.MarineDebris.noaa.gov.
