The Capitol Hill Oceans Week Leadership Awards Dinner
Capitol
Hill Oceans Week 2003 kicked off on the evening of June 10th with
a tribute dinner honoring Senator Ernest F. Hollings of South Carolina
and Congressman Jim Saxton of New Jersey. Each received the National
Marine Sanctuary Foundation Leadership Award in recognition of their
longstanding commitment to protecting and preserving our ocean and
coastal resources and specifically for their roles in introducing
the Oceans Act of 2000.
Actress, model, and diver Lauren Hutton served as Master of Ceremonies
and world-renowned ocean explorers and NMSF Trustees Dr. Robert Ballard
and Jean-Michel Cousteau served as Presenters.
In
addition, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation presented its
first Volunteer of the
Year awards to Gordon Bennett of the Gulf
of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary and Alan Brooks of
