The Capitol Hill Oceans Week Leadership Awards Dinner

Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2003 kicked off on the evening of June 10th with a tribute dinner honoring Senator Ernest F. Hollings of South Carolina and Congressman Jim Saxton of New Jersey. Each received the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation Leadership Award in recognition of their longstanding commitment to protecting and preserving our ocean and coastal resources and specifically for their roles in introducing the Oceans Act of 2000.


Actress, model, and diver Lauren Hutton served as Master of Ceremonies and world-renowned ocean explorers and NMSF Trustees Dr. Robert Ballard and Jean-Michel Cousteau served as Presenters.

In addition, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation presented its first Volunteer of the Year awards to Gordon Bennett of the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary and Alan Brooks of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary.
