Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2007 Summary Report

What: Capitol Hill Ocean Week 2007 brought together a wide-range of stakeholders to discuss current ocean and coastal issues. Panel speakers included Members of Congress, as well as representatives of federal and state governments, industry, academia, and nonprofit organizations. In conjunction with Capitol Hill Ocean Week 2007, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation (NMSF) held its Annual Leadership Awards Dinner on June 5, 2007. The NMSF presented its Leadership Award to Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, and its Lifetime Achievement Award to NOAA’s first administrator, Dr. Robert M. White. In addition, the Foundation presented the 2007 Volunteer of the Year Award to Brian Diveley for his work with Monitor National Marine Sanctuary.

Sounds in the Sea: Acoustics and Marine Mammals
The possible impacts of sounds on marine mammal communication, foraging, and survival has become a significant concern for scientists, conservationists, legislators, policymakers, and industry in recent years. Panelists discussed the current state of knowledge regarding the scope of human impacts and new approaches to understand and mitigate adverse effects.

Census of Marine Life: Incorporating Biological Data in Ocean Observatories;
CORE Governors' Awards Ceremony
Biological data is essential to understanding the overall health and sustainability of our nation's ocean ecosystems, as well as the entire global marine ecosystem. Panelists discussed the importance of incorporating this data in ocean observatories. At the beginning of this luncheon, the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education (CORE) presented awards to the Governors of Washington, Oregon, and California for their effort to protect the ocean and coast.

NMSF Congressional Staff Leadership Award Presentation
For more than 30 years, NOAA has provided sound science, strong stewardship, and essential services to the nation. NOAA's Administrators, past and present, discussed the key issues of their terms and provide current perspective on resolution of these issues. Also during this special luncheon, selected current and former Congressional staffers were honored for their hard work and dedication to the benefit of our oceans.
