National Marine Sanctuary Foundation Announces Fundraising Initiative for New Visitor Center in Key West

Silver Spring, MD - The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation today announced a $1.5-million fundraising campaign to create and install dynamic and interactive exhibits that interpret the Florida Keys ecosystem as part of a planned world-class visitor center in Key West. Construction on the interagency facility, the highlight of the Dr. Nancy Foster Florida Keys Environmental Center, is due to begin in early 2004, and the Center is due to open in Spring of 2005.

2003 Thunder Bay Maritime Festival

Hundreds of people turned out for the 2003 Thunder Bay Maritime Festival in Alpena, Michigan August 23-24 - a family cultural event highlighting the mission of the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve and the maritime history of the Great Lakes.

2004 Thunder Bay Tall Ships Festival

The 4th annual Thunder Bay Maritime Festival, a free family event, took place on the nation’s birthday and featured tours of the three-masted 19th century Great Lakes schooner, Denis Sullivan, as well as a line-up of entertainment, games, displays and boat tours. The Festival is co-hosted by the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and the City of Alpena.

Schedule and Entertainment Announced for 2003 Thunder Bay Maritime Festival

Alpena, MI - The Thunder Bay Maritime Festival Committee invites everyone to "Celebrate the Sanctuary" at the Thunder Bay Maritime Festival, August 23-24, in downtown Alpena. This free family event will feature the regional musical talents of the award-winning Song of the Lakes, as well as the popular acappella group, The Overtones, and renowned Great Lakes story-tellers Larry Massey and Genot Picor. The Festival will also showcase the R/V Laurentian, giving the public a rare firsthand look at a modern research vessel.

Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2003

Capitol Hill Oceans Week 2003 brought together a wide-range of stakeholders to discuss current ocean and coastal issues. Panel speakers included Members of Congress, as well as representatives of federal and state governments, industry, academia, and nonprofit organizations. A substantive focus was paid to key ocean issues during panels titled, "Exploring Our Oceans", and "Managing Marine Areas".

Congressional and Community Leaders Recognized for Their Roles in Ocean Protection and Preservation

Washington, DC - A veritable “Who’s Who” of the Ocean world will be on hand as the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation presents its First Annual Leadership Awards to U.S. Senator Ernest F. Hollings (D-SC) and U.S. Representative Jim Saxton (R-NJ) on June 10th as part of Capitol Hill Oceans Week. The Award recognizes their long-term contributions to ocean protection and preservation, specifically for their introduction of the Oceans Act of 2000 in their respective chambers of Congress. The Oceans Act established the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, which is currently preparing its recommendations to Congress about future ocean policy.

Olympic Coast Volunteer Honored Nationally

Washington, DC – A volunteer with the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, Alan Brooks of Olympia, Washington, is being honored with the first ever ‘Volunteer of the Year’ Award by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, the official nonprofit partner of the federally managed National Marine Sanctuary Program.

Unveiling of Newly Renovated Exhibits at the National Aquarium

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation hosted a cocktail reception March 20th at the National Aquarium in Washington, D.C. to mark the unveiling of newly renovated exhibits throughout the Aquarium, including many featuring the National Marine Sanctuary System. The guests included the NMSF Board of Trustees, the managers of the National Marine Sanctuaries, representatives from NOAA, and congressional and corporate constituents.

From Sea to Shining Sea: Epcot's Living Seas, Walt Disney World Resort

'From Sea to Shining Sea: A Celebration of Marine Sanctuaries' has opened at Epcot's Living Seas, Walt Disney World Resort. The centerpiece of this exhibit, the masterful painting by renowned artist Robert Lyn Nelson, 'From Sea to Shining Sea', has traveled the world, representing the United States at Expo '98 in Lisbon, as part of the 'Year of the Ocean' celebration. The exhibit has also been featured at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C.

Little Feat Hawaii Concert Posters Benefit National Marine Sanctuaries

In commemoration of its Hawaiian Islands Concert Tour in November and to help raise awareness for the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, Little Feat has collaborated with NMSF Trustee and internationally renowned Marine Artist Robert Lyn Nelson to produce a set of four limited edition posters. A portion of the poster sales will be donated to the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation to further its efforts on behalf of the 13 National Marine Sanctuaries.

Breaux of Louisiana was honored with the first National Marine Sanctuary Foundation Stewardship Award at a gala dinner attended by approximately 200 guests on Friday, January 24, 2003, at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans. The award was given for Senator Breaux’s strategic support of the expansion of the National Marine Sanctuary System, and specifically for his role in the creation of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.

New Orleans, LA - Louisiana Senator John B. Breaux will be awarded the first National Marine Sanctuary Foundation Stewardship Award at a gala dinner on Friday, January 24, 2003, at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. The award is given for his role in the expansion of the National Marine Sanctuary System, and specifically for his role in the creation of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, located 100 miles off the coast of the Louisiana/Texas border.
