All the hard work, the endless hours, the continual education it all results in one remarkable, planet-altering moment… and ours came on June 15, 2006 when President George W. Bush used the Antiquities Act to create the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument.
With that one bold and visionary action, he increased the amount of ocean under federal protection within the National Marine Sanctuary System by more than sevenfold. That is truly something for all of us to celebrate.
The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument is a major milestone on the path to greater protection of our ocean resources one that empowers and inspires us to achieve important protections for our entire planet. The first Marine National Monument in the National Marine Sanctuary System, the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands joins 13 sanctuaries across the country. Together, these special places comprise our nation’s network of marine sanctuaries, which truly are America’s Underwater Treasures.
This Annual Report will share with you the heartening news from throughout our programs. These are the incremental steps that lead to the immense strides forward, and I hope you celebrate the small victories as well as the large ones. You are a part of our work. Together we’re doing what must be done to ensure the care of our ocean and Great Lakes treasures. Together, we are creating a legacy for coming generations.
We have great cause for celebration this year. I hope you join me in feeling pleased and proud. We’re honored to have you as an ally.
Thank you,

Lori Arguelles
