President's plan neglects oceans, sanctuaries

President Obama has proposed a plan that could have unintended consequences for how we protect our oceans. On January 13 the president announced a government restructuring that would, among other things, transfer the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from the Department of Commerce to the Department of the Interior. NMSF President Jason Patlis issued the following statement:

“While we applaud efforts to make our government more efficient, we are concerned that the plan – which seeks to reorganize the Commerce Department – treats NOAA as an afterthought.

Funding given to sustainable fishing, student-outreach projects

Silver Spring, Md. – The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is proud to announce eight awardees of the 2011 Ernest F. Hollings Ocean Awareness Trust Fund. Organizations across the country submitted proposals about marine mammals, non-point source pollution, marine debris, human health, and ocean acidification. NMSF received nearly double the number of proposals it did in 2010. The 2011 Hollings Grant recipients are:

Former First Lady Laura Bush agrees with NMSF’s call to establish a string of national marine sanctuaries in the Gulf of Mexico.

In a Dec. 7 speech at the State of the Gulf Summit in Houston, Bush said sanctuaries are the clear way to protect ocean-reliant industries while maintaining conservation efforts.

Florida Keys NMS works with Navy to protect corals

Thanks to a partnership between Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Naval Air Station, and a group of conservation organizations that began last month, over 2,000 coral colonies have been saved from a seawall construction project in Key West, Florida.

The corals, which are protected by the sanctuary, were thriving on a 425-foot section of Navy’s Mole Pier that is slated for repairs. The sanctuary worked closely with the Navy to ensure that corals could be moved before repairs began.

Silver Spring, MD – On March 31, 2011, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation (NMSF) received a payment of $125,000 for use in the Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary (FBNMS) in Pago Pago, American Samoa. The money was awarded as part of a plea agreement made by Koo’s Shipping Company for the unlawful disposal of waste in the ocean.
