On March 21, 2013 NMSF president Jason Patlis appealed to Congress to increase FY14 funding for NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS). ONMS has not received sufficient appropriations for several consecutive budget cycles, affecting its ability to effectively fulfill its mandates in managing the 14 sites that comprise the National Marine Sanctuary System.

Winners of inaugural Sanctuary Classic announced

Four winners were named for the inaugural Sanctuary Classic at an awards luncheon at the Gulf Coast Fishing Center in Largo, Fl. Each of the young winners took home a $1,000 college scholarship for the best photo during this national catch-and-release fishing tournament that highlighted a family-friendly way to enjoy national marine sanctuaries.

The winning photos are of Aidan Rose in Channel Islands, Anthony and Michael Gonzales in the Florida Keys, Wesley Farrer in the Florida Keys, and Zane Toyon in the Channel Islands.

Ron knows citizens have an impact in sanctuaries.

Using GPS technology, Ron leads a team of fellow volunteers to identify whale locations from tourist ships in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. The team also looks for Marine Mammal Act infractions. This information is then sent to the sanctuary for further analysis, providing an enormous additional capacity to the sanctuary's data collection and research.

Trustee emeritus Admiral Watkins dies at age 85
